Spend time studying and configuring the liferay additional applications for theme creation which are
Liferay Plugin SDK 6.0.5 - for creating portlets and theme, needs to run ant on command prompt to deploy theme
Liferay IDE 1.0.1 - a liferay plugin for eclipse, easier for creating portlets, however does not support theme creation. Only the next version 1.1 supports theme creation which will come out late August or early September.
Currently using Liferay Plugin SDK for testing theme creation.

- Modify css on the template.
The default theme for liferay uses alot of CSS3 feature which is helpful for applying rounded border, shadow etc.
However most of the IE version does not support CSS3.
- Manage to create a simple portlet using Liferay IDE and a bit of JQuery.
Probably going to use portlet for the image slideshow on the home page.
